Since the 1970s Marcel Odenbach has worked with and developed the video and film medium. With a documentary narrative style, archival materials are mixed with new materials. Questions of identity and identity creation are central to Odenbach’s art and he sheds light on the individual person’s relation to larger group structures.

In Männergeschichte, 2003, Marcel Odenbach explores men’s roles in Turkey, partly by filming men who visit a hairdresser, partly by showing archival films with Ottoman soldiers and Turkish elite soldiers. In In stillen Teichen lauren Krokodile, 2004, Odenbach deals with the genocide in Rwanda by showing clippings from television news with agitating politicians juxtaposed with images of orphans who live in the shadow of the political power game.
