Gabriel Lester
Born in 1972 in Holland
Lives and works in New York and Amsterdam  CV
---------------------------------------------
Gabriel Lester began his artistic career with film studies and the interest in film is obvious in his visually powerful installations. A common feature in Lester’s work is that elements are taken out of their original contexts and placed in new ones. The works essentially concerns the way fiction creates illusions, something that he does in the same spirit as he reveals it. Gabriel Lester’s work invites visitors to the gallery to a fictive world where the experience is connected to an activity in the exhibition space.

In the installation A Beautiful Gamble, 2004, which Lester showed at IASPIS in Stockholm, he used theatrical stage backdrops from the Drottningholm Palace Theatre, the Stockholm Opera and Stockholm City Theatre. The backdrops showed landscapes from different eras. By covering the gallery walls with the backdrops and piling them on top of one another he created the illusion of an enchanted wood, but also of a carpet shop where the backdrops lost their original value when they became commodities among others.
