Monica Bonvicini is interested in the way relations of power manifest themselves in public. With humour and satire she attacks the hidden power structures that are constructed by a heterosexual macho culture. Bonvicini takes her starting point in existing architecture, which, she argues, rests on a chauvinist and sexist fundament. Through quotes and excerpts from texts by famous architects and from classic architectural theory together with pornographic images and stereotyped maliscious portraits, she confronts the existing canon. In other works she uses chains, rubber bands and fencing, charging the exhibition space with symbolic meaning.
